MULTI MEDIA SYSTEM

After listening to the stock Bose system for several weeks, I came to the conclusion that I needed something a little better. I didn't want a real hi-end system, but did want to improve the quality of what was already there and add video. It won't win any awards, but is a significant improvement and good enough for a truck.

This is what went in;

Necvox 6.5" TV/DVD/CD Head unit
Luxma 10 DVD/CD/MP3 Changer
Vizualogic 7" headrest monitors

Kicker KX300.4 for;
Pioneer REV 6.5" comp speakers - front
Pioneer REV 6.5" coax speakers - rear

Kicker KX400.1 for;
Kicker Comp VR 12" in ported box
Stinger HPM 1 farad capacitor for amp

The Necvox head unit looks very good and the screen quality is pretty good too. Sound output is okay and an improvement, but could be better. But I wanted a smooth looking install and didn't want a pop out screen, so didn't have a lot of choice. The GUI is very basic and after getting used to an Eclipse, somewhat of a let down. Plays DVD's and CD's very well though and is very easy to use. I took some quick pics, but the quality is not very good as it was dark outside. Click on a pic below to see a larger version;

The Vizualogic headrest monitors are a little disappointing and picture quality is not as good as it could be. They are acceptable and better than many I have seen, but could be better. I had 6.4" AEI monitors in my last truck and they were excellent and really crisp.

The Kicker amps produce a very crisp sound with plenty of mids, better than I thought they would be. Sound level on max is just too loud for me, but is amazingly clear and free of any distortion. They produce enough sound for all but SPL fanatics.

Again, the Pioneer speakers surprised me and deliver excellent sound quality. Sure, there are plenty of better speakers, but for the price, you can't go wrong, great quality and plenty of power handling.

The Comp VR delivers great bass and I mounted the remote boost from the amp inside the center console. Very clear bass without thumping too much, not enough for someone who wants a high SPL, but more than enough for me. The ported box can easily be disconnected and removed should I need the space.

I kept the stock speaker grilles in the doors, if you look you can see the yellow cones inside, but otherwise everything looks stock.

The amps are mounted under the rear seat, and the seat still folds down fine.

The stock head unit is still required, so the stock sub was removed and the stock head mounted there, although I understand that there adaptors that can alleviate the need for retaining the stock head unit now.

I didn't replace the two speakers at the very rear in the trunk, and these are connected up to Onstar, which works fine.

Everything still works, apart from the stereo steering wheel controls and the rear passenger controls. There is an adaptor to make the steering wheel controls work which I have, but I haven't installed it yet.

Overall, I'm very happy with the install, everything looks factory and fits in very well. It is a significant improvement over stock, plus I now have video to keep the family happy.
