Death on Radical Hill Colo. :(

Postby Alec W » Mon Jul 30, 2007 10:23 pm

Copied from the Denver post:

A woman was killed Saturday and her companion severely injured when their Jeep tumbled from the top of a steep off-road trail in Summit County.

The fatal accident happened at the top of Radical Hill, a 12,500-foot summit that can be reached along a narrow road used by hikers and four-wheel-drive vehicles.

At the summit, "the vehicle came off and went approximately a half mile down the side of a mountain before coming to a rest," said Joe Ben Slivka, a spokesman for the Summit County Rescue Group.

He described the Radical Hill trail, at the southern edge of Summit County, as very popular with Jeep drivers. "It's a difficult four-wheel-drive trail, but not impossible," he said. "We do have a fair number of accidents that occur there annually."

Having looked down the edge of that hill only 28 days ago whne it was still blocked with snow, I'm honestly surprised it hasn't happened long before now..

Hope this unfortunate accident doesn't cause the same issues that happened on the descent off Argentine down to Peru Creek when someone went over the edge there, being that that portion of the pass is now closed..

Turn off from the top of Radical headed down..

Down here...

Had it not been blocked by snow, I think I would have still had to think long and hard about heading down that hill..

That's a scary trail in a lot of ways ... steep, very narrow and off-camber, with ruts, trail damage, deep gravel, tight switchbacks and snowmelt ... and at the top, all of the above plus a series of offset moguls to test your locker and articulation. I ran it once in my old Blazer and I about soiled my armor seesawing over the moguls at the top. It was crazy to run it without a selectable locker, but the G80 did its job and kept me from losing it like that poor couple.

Sure hope they don't close it

I get that up is way harder then down...but went down it about 2 or 3 years ago and I do not see how it is considered anything more than moderate. Maybe it is worse now...but I don't remember being even the least bit concerned when I went down.
When you are stupid...you do dumb things because you don't know any better.
When you are a dumbass...you know better, but still do them anyway.
I have been accused of both.

I don’t think it's hard and it was probably a driver error or a mechanical thing. That’s the thing with shelf roads, when anything goes wrong you can die. It’s like driving on the road, deaths are not that common but do happen.

All in all it may not be that difficult, but I don't even like standing on the top of a 6ft ladder...

I'll be up there this weekend again. I'll see if it's still there and will see if I can get some pics of where it happened there.

That's one of the worst pics I;ve seen of an off roading accident. :x I'd really like to know what happened.

From what people have been posting on Colorado4x4 they say that it will not be removed because of its location. To get a tow truck to where it is sitting would tear up the area. From looking at the other pictures there is not a trail very close to the accident.

It sounds like he was actually on one of the really narrow side trails in that area, he was way loaded with camping gear and slipped off the side (rolling something like 1600 feet). You can’t winch it that far and as Mike pointed out you would do more damage recovering it than just leaving it.

It will get stripped and be shell full of bullet holes eventually is my guess.

do not think this was on Radical Hill. It was on trail #5 just past the 6.2 turnoff back towards Tiger Road. I was there last week and the vehicle is still there in the ravine. think it has been about 4 years now. 39.502450, -105.856914

I googled those coordinates and found this picture,

http://static.panoramio.com/photos/orig ... 593703.jpg

Also looks like a stock Jeep Liberty from what I can tell, not sure that was the best vehicle choice for what was most likely a novice offroader. Still, No matter how many years old this story is, its sad to see someone seriosly injured or die from doing a sport we all love so much. That vehicle is a monument and a serious reminder to pay attention to what your doing and be safe at all times and leave the stupid crap for horsing around back at camp.
