Axle Alley

Postby MaxPF » Tue Oct 19, 2010 3:19 am

Todd and I ran this trail Sunday in Todd's Jeep, along with Brent and Amber in their first gen K5 and Marv and T in Marv's moon buggy (known as the Marvzda, since it's powered by a Mazda 4 banger). This trail is known for it's 3 major and several minor waterfalls, and thus it favors medium-long wheelbase rigs. A winch is mandatory for most rigs - only Marv's buggy was able to scale all waterfalls without winching. Brent's heavy K5 had to be winched on the first major waterfall, which is the tallest of them all. Todd's short wheelbase Jeep required winching on all 3 waterfalls, although we felt that if he had newer tires he could have made the last 2 major falls unassisted - his tires are now 3 years old, and have gotten considerably harder due to the heat cycling of constant road use :( Nonetheless, it was a fun day of wheeling with good friends, and Todd got to run the hardest trail he has ever done, and likely will ever do. Here's pics of the first major waterfall, which marks the actual start of the trail:

That looks like a serious trail. Fun times indeed. That first waterfall seems more like a wall than a trail entrance.

Yup. Besides the waterfalls there are several rock gardens full of diff hangers and potential tire slicers. Luckily, it is shore - about 0.6 miles total length IIRC. Still, it takes about 4 hours to run with 3 rigs (with a lunch stop), and all day with 6+ rigs. Whats nice about the trail is that, as long as you have rocker protection and winch up the entrance waterfall at the proper angle, there is no issues with body damage on this trail. Undercarriage damage is a whole 'nother story - good skidplating or lots of ground clearance is needed.
