Wheeling - T-33A Plane Crash

Postby Alec W » Sat Jul 19, 2008 11:48 pm

I found a link for this trail a while ago so we did this trail (and 3 others today). This thing crashed when I was 1! I found it interesting that so much was still there.

Two people were killed in the crash that happened on Jule 27th, 1965. It was a T-33A jet trainer, and the pilot was a very experienced Air Force Major named Jay Currie. First Lieutenant Donald Darby was riding along as a technical observer. They were flying from Buckley Field to California, and Major Currie was viewing some property he owned in Colorado, flying at 13,000 feet.

The reasons for the crash are not known. He was told to go to 17,000 feet by Air Traffic Control, but then contact was lost. It is known that he was flying slowly, there were no technical issues with the plane, and neither of the pilots attempted to eject from the plane. There were thunderstorms reported in the area, which may have contributed to the crash.

Crazy that that stuff is still up there and still in pretty fair shape. There's at least a couple crashsites in the Sierras that you can get to by hiking in from the OHV trails.

Damn, that's unreal.

I'm guessing they had no clue of their impending doom, otherwise they probably would punched out. Unless of course they were outside of their ejection minimums. Bummer.

especially with aircraft grade aluminum being worth what it is. We had a wrecked plane as a prop on the paintball field I play on. Someone stole it for the metal.

It's an ugly trail, who would even go there for scrap?

There's bits of a plane wreck off the Lockhart Basin Trail in Moab that we looked for a bit.. (Check the new Wells' book)... We'd already spent an extra hour or so on the trail and were getting pretty dang tired by the time we got that far along, so we didn't look very long once we figured out it was maybe a mile or so of hiking off the road through some deep washes and prickly scrub brush..

Just did some quick searches on Google and don't really find any info about the plane wreck..

HHHMMMM.... you should paint the wreckage a pea soup/ puke/ metalic green (with beadlocks and "one fine" canvas slantback thats ONE OF A MILLION)! THAT WAY NO ONE WILL FIND THE WRECKAGE! Especially since there's nothing to be gained besides blazing a new trail.

Actually I don't mind you posting here. I mind that you act like a self-righteous, self-important cun-t. How do you justify your attitude when you contribute nothing of value? Are you French, or just an azz?
