I do not know much about it but try reading this:

Are you using mono or braid? You often see a topshot of mono to provide some stretch. Some folks also recommend a long leader that is more abrasion-resistant if they are fishing structure that will abrade the line.

It appears IGFA heavy tackle rules do not let you go with anything longer than 30':

There are plenty of guys there that fish out of your part of the coast. If you like, I can give you some names of guys that you could PM for info if you do not want to post the questions.

Thanks, I found some good info on that site. I'm going to be targeting Wahoo to start with and think I've pretty much figured everything out. The rest will come with experience, I hope...

Good luck finding some big hooters.

You have to talk like that if you want to be taken seriously!

I was cleaning out the boat for a trip this weekend and thought it would be a cool pic.

Heres a saltwater rod I had custom made about 5 years ago. The blue detail on the rod is all individual threads. :o I can't imagine how anybody could do such a thing with thread. :duh:

:o Man this could prove to be expensive hobby. I must confess to feeling a little "inadequate" heading out with only two rods on the boat, I was thinking of getting some black sticks to make it look like more

You'd be surprised. Having a rod custom made like that isn't a whole lot more than buying the factory made Rod (atleast from the builder I knew). I want to say I paid about $300 for it. It's built on a G-Loomis blank and a similar factory rod was maybe $50 less. I didn't knwo he was going to do the detail at the handle. I only asked for the eye thread to match the reel.

It's not just whether you have enough rods, but do you have enough rod holders? :duh:

Seems to be one of the most common comments on a new boat -- needs more rod holders. :D

There are some local (as in Texas) custom or semi-custom rod builders that are well thought of, but I am not good enough to know the difference.

Filling them all with rods is the hard (expensive) part :wall:

Just wait until you start losing $20/$30 dollar lures and associated terminal tackle regularly. :o

At least I hear that happens -- I prefer to charter someone else's boat and gear whenever I manage to get to the coast, which is not very often.

I can see that coming, especially considering my lack of skills

My boat will hold 12 in the main rod locker. 6 in the rear rod holder. I have another storage compartment that is cut to hold rods just without the fancy rod holders/dividers. (I don't use the latter for rods) and I have room to strap down about 12 to the deck (I don't really count that as storage and only use the deck straps moving from fishing hole to fishing hole)

:yup: :wall: This is only a portion of what I carry in the boat. I have about half a dozen other boxes on shelfs in the garage.
