Hunner's Alpha H3

How you built it

Well I thought since this is my build thread on my Alpha I should stick this in here to be found as well.
http://www.sy-klone.com/mm5/merchant.mv ... ry_Code=NW
I have had time to run it some and I really like the extra zip the snorkle has added and the pre-cleaner does not seem to restrict that. Now when I'm GPS surveying for my farmer friends when they are cutting beans and rice I will get to see it blows out chafe when I cross behind the combines! I think they have a model for combines too.
I got to try it in an Arkansaw scaled blizzard conditions and was pleased it performed well. I did not try shoving snow in there like their demo but it did not clog up and the filter was not wetted out.

MORE POWER arh arh arh
Dual Batteries, deep cycle, dual posts, thru bolted to OEM battery platform (with a little Hunnerizing), welding cable with thicker insulation and fine wiring for flexibility, closed end hydraulically crimped lead coated copper terminals, heat shrink, heat reflective insulation. The KISS method for now. NO swithches. Less snarfle of wires. I can remove a jumper. I left the hold down bolts long for now. I'm trying to decide on a cross brace for even better tie down.
Notice I have a pos and neg post open for my rear winch connections also.

There's gotta be more room right there w/ the v8 than the I-5.. I've been trying to figure out how you got all that packed into that spot and I just don't see it fitting under my hood without moving a lot of other stuff around..

BFH and a sawzall! No really I tried to leave everything in place so it could be changed back, just in case. I only bent one small tab with a hole in it and drilled a few. There have been some I-5 dual battery set ups done recently. Check around. I had them in my 06 for awhile but with that strange lady at the dealer in service and the warranty issue like her thinking the purple cranium diff cover destroyed my locker I removed it for most of the time. She's history, well maybe removed from history.
I think SAE welding wire 2 gauge thicker insulation and finer wire for flex is plenty. I used closed end, lead coated copper terminals and shrinkwrapped. I was thinking of hard winching and the amps it could take. With the conditions our vehicles are or can be in, it only cost a little more to use the highest quality for the best shot at dependability. It's a Hummer!
Using the AGM batteries has eliminated corrosion of terminals and wiring from battery acid in the setups I have done.
Remember it's the AMPs not the volts that get you!

Looks like mil spec. Excellent quality work Hunner. You are a master crafter. Miraculous how you shoehorned those twin batteries in there!

I'm guessing those bolts in the middle of the batteries are what's holding it all down..??

Yeah just drill a hole right thru the battery  That is the same way I did it on the Porshce race build. There are two holes there between the cylinders. These AGM are built like a six pack!
I have decided since I can do this today I'm going to make up some jumpers out of some high grade 2 gauge SAE fine strand welding cable. The marine tinned is just too high for most people to justify for this short length and I don't get in salt water with the H3. AGM batteries will also eliminate alot of the corrosion from acid. I would have to buy 100' to get the price down but just a little on the marine. I had it figured out awhile back to use a spot welder to solder the ends. A torch is messy and will warp your insulation. This stuff Im going to use today is good enough for a John Deere so it should fit a Hummer, right? I'm going to use a special crimper that makes a hexagonal crimp all the way around instead of a flatner or spike then heat shrink. Stay tuned.

Oh and for the inquiry about those black things, laser aquired targeting, well ok, spot lights. Where have you been? Must be a newbie, welcome

I left them a little long for now as Im thinking up a cross piece to tie them together.
Yeah, sorry, I only put a brief post here in my 'build" thread.

Re: Hunner's Alpha H3

This is the short version for my builds thread. I put the BulletProof tie rods on the Alpha. I used the old steering knuckles off the 06 that had the outer tie rod mounting hole drilled out to remove the taper so the grade 10.9 bolt would fit.
It was good "practice" for a cvhalfshaft swap. However this goes a step further because of removing the calipers and hub. Great fun! :wall: twice!
I do NOT have bump steer with these tie rods. Have I mentioned that?
As one who has spent an abnormal amount of time under the front end, and did alot of inquiry from smarter people than me I think the nature of the H3 tie rods, even the 16mm, have a tendancy to bump steer when they flex and is even more pronounced by lifting and running bigger tires. This increases the angles and allows more upward forces to affect steering as it pushes up on the steering gear, with possible rack failure. Hard acceleration adds to the lifting effect and the tires are changing toe as they bounce around on rough terrain. The stock tie rods only articulate 23 degrees and then are maxed out and apply force on the end of the rack. The BP tie rods articulate 30 degrees without binding.
I also installed the adjustable sway bar links on the Alpha needed for the inside clevis to clear. These are high quality Curries and have the proper size bolts.
The ride with these is nice and steady and the bouncing effect from the OEM tie rods is eliminated or to a level not noticeable, except the absence there of. Along with Alpha torsions, Bilstein shocks, and extended bump stops this is coming together. Hmmm Moab, Mojave.......a little testing is needed.

Thanks, I'm looking forward to your new rigs "transformagation" as well. I even more now eye every mall crawler H3 as a rolling supply of parts. There are several around here in used car lots that are adventure or offroad pkgs with not a single scratch underneath. Odds are some of those will crash and the buzzards will swarm! I stay on a list to call for cadavers! I figure if I build up a parts supply I can keep the machine going as long as I do, if need be.
