H3 life expectancy???

Postby ajcart3 » Wed Aug 01, 2012 1:48 pm

I am considering buying a 2006 H3 WITH 90,000 miles on it. What problems should I expect and how long can I expect it to last? It only has had one owner and I am impressed with how good it looks for having 90,000 miles. Any help you all can give would be great! Thanks!

Hi.
By 90 000 miles all the early failures should have been sorted. I had the transfer case failure and gearbox replacement for difficult engagement of 1st gear (manual).
My car has 165 000 km done , roughly equals 100 000 miles. 2008 model.
The 2006 model, I believe had head problems, check the service books, this might have been done.
The engine is stronger than ever, but a valve or two are leaking a bit , which you can see and hear when parked on a slope in a gear (without the hand brake on).
The hand brake never worked well.
The clutch was always suspect but to my surprise survived. Still the original one.
Many of the little lights in knobs and buttons of the radio, heater etc. stopped working, and.... sometimes work ok, only to fail again. A bit annoying.
This car did more than half of its mileage on dirt roads of Australia and many challenging off road treks.
I run 35inch tyres with the rims a bit offset, so naturally I was always concerned about the wheel bearings and the tie rods, but so far nothing has failed.
I never used car seat covers and the beige leather interior still looks fresh (we have nasty red dust here in Australia that can quickly hurt the looks of any car's interior).
Have I mentioned dogs travelling in the car daily?
The 4WD switches sticking and throwing off codes.
The steering rack bracket going loose, once replaced , once reinforced, now waiting for replacement again.
I really like it.
My family like it.
I can't imagine what would be the replacement for a H3.
On road a comfortable cruiser.
Off road unstoppable.
Great image.
Go for it , buy one and enjoy it.
How long will it last? Don't have a clue :)

The reports on the I5 from both H3 and Colorado and Canyons are great...

If you find a black one with a Boulder Accesories front bumper without a winch and a bottom that looks like it got in a fight with a chainsaw, avoid it at all costs.. It took me 5 and a half years of beating it to kill that SOB..

Other than that your bets are about average for any 2006 vehicle.. Early 06 models did have some issues with a weak ring and pinion in the front diff. Early 06 can be determined by silver/black hub caps instead of the silver only caps on Late 06 and on.. Early 06 also used the parking lights as running lights instead of the headlights.
