4.88 gears in my H2

Postby Mysons truck » Tue Jun 24, 2008 11:39 pm

Just checking to see if anyone is running 4.88 gears in their H2. I just installed a set which are still in the break in period.

Thanks Sewie,

Rugged H2, how do you like the 4.88 and are you running larger than stock tires?

Please report on your observations. I have been thinking 4.56's or 4.88's for a future mod after the 37's. I use 4.88's in my other truck with 37's and it's just fine for the street.

I never re-geared on my H2, but 4.88's with 38's would have helped a lot, I think 4.56's would be ideal for 37's.

I like them so far.

4WP did the install and the first set didn't make it home, they grenaded on the way.

The adhesive sealant they put the case back together with blocked the oil channel to the Pinion bearing and it seized on the freeway. They took care of it well though and ordered all new Precision ring and pinion and master install kit for the front.

I haven't had any more problems except it now has a slight leak. I'm hoping it is just slightly overfilled, and I plan on draining the fluid out here pretty quick and replacing it. Tomp told me when he had his done there was quite a bit of metal in the gear oil.

Off road I love the new gears with the front locker. ;)

4WP managed to overfill mine so much that it poured out continously out of the FILL HOLE when I removed the plug. Not sure I could pull that off even if I tried...

Glad they got you taken care of RuggedH2

I love the 4.56s with 37s. Like Phil mentioned, the 4.88s would be preferred with 38s

I just returned from a trip (120 mile one way) to broken arrow trail in Sedona, AZ. The 4.88 gears worked extremely well with the stock 315 tires. I am looking forward to installing 37's. I would add the 4" lift and 38's but I only have 85" clearance to the garage. They definitely add a noticable performace increase. (The truck liked going up steep hills.)

It's a good idea to change the fluid after 500 miles or so anyway when you have new gears installed. Also gives you a chance to see if there is any excessive wear etc.

Find a ring and pinion "ratio calculator" and you will see the 4.56 gearing is geared slightly higher with 37" tires over the factory 4.10 gearing and stock tires

4.88 gears in my H2

Postby big2dabank » Mon Mar 24, 2014 9:09 pm

Unless your towing a lot, I would definitely go with 4.56. I've had 4.56s with 37s for quite a while and have never regretted it. Also added a front locker when I changed the gears.
