MOAB...UTV Style

Postby Timgco » Fri May 23, 2008 11:52 am

...thought I'd share a differnt kind of wheeling. For those that have been to Moab are familiar with the trails and terrain. The other vehicles I have ran in Moab were a blast...but not quite like this!!! 8)

My last trip to Moab, I tried something different. Last Summer I purchased a Yamah Rhino (carb)and that got me into antoher 08 (fuel injected). SO I started modding that toy. It's a blast with suspension, cage, harness,,,all kinds of mods.

So, I attended a UTV event in Moab. Just like our event, people from all over the US attended. We had police escorts to the trail heads every day...and than back when we all finished. THat worked out well as most trail heads do not have enough room for trialer parking.

One of the guy's that was a trail leader had video made.

The first part of the movie is "blind barrel racing." Yep, the driver is blindfolded and the passenger tells you where to go. THey both hav a mic on, so everyone can hear what you're saying. It was too funny. The last part of the vid is on Hell's for a little fun.

It was a great group and gave Moab a whole different persepctive than riding in a HUMMER.

...can;t wait to go back again.

Those look like a blast!

If you don't mind my asking, what does one setup like most of those run?

That's pretty sweet. My dad keeps talking to me about getting one of those. He thinks it would be more fun to play in a toy than in his vehicle.

They definitely would be more fun to hammer on.

Yeah, Hells was a different animal. STOCK SUCKS! You tip over way to easliy. Suspension, cage, harness, wheel spacers at a minimum.

But after that you're set. The Rhino has front and rear lockers, Hi and Low range. THey top at at 42mph stock, but the upgrades are capable of 65mph or so. Cost is around 8K to 11K to get one stock. Than once you get long travel suspension, resi. shocks, full cage, 5 point harness, winch, front and rear bumpers, it's starts to add up quickly. At about 15K you can take on some serious trails. AT about 20K, you're near bulletproof and ready for racing. I talked to one guy at teh event and with his trailer, he was sitting at about 40K.

Yep, if you break that, you throw it on your trailer and your DD or ride home isn;t busted. IMO, it's more a thrill because the off camber stuff is X10 on pucker factor. THere's nothing like climbing up a near vertical wall and you start ligting your front tire off the ground 3ft or so. :yup:

Glad I found this thread.

I'm considering purchasing a UTV also. I hear a lot about the rhinos but I am beginning to settle in on the Polaris Razor. It goes 55mph stock with a twin cylinder 800cc right out of the crate. Plus the thing is less than a thousand pounds stock.

Thoughts???

It really comes down to the brand loyality thing IMO. I have been on a couple of forums where belts have been sredded on those...but upgrades are available. They are smaller inside than a Rhino. So if you're a big person, it may be a tight fit. If you are after the speed and you are going to do a few upgardes, That Razr or Rhino will break the 60mph top end easily. The Razr has lower center of gravity and is hands down faster in stock form over the Rhino but has less clearance. SO there are tradeoffs between those two. That new Kawi Teryx is one bad machine. I road with one of those in Moab that was modified. It has a twin in it so it's got a ton of low end torque. sidexsideforums has quite a few opions on all of them. I'd start there and than go drive a few. If you sing up on one of the forums, I'm sure someone in your area would take you out for a spin. If you're local to Denver, you can drive the Rhino to see if you like that.

Well written response. I have been in a Rhino, and I like it, especially since I'm a big guy. I liked the additional performance of the Polaris, since it is close stock to a supercharged Rhino. I do want it (whatever) to be fast, and I will very likely modify it with engine mods and LT suspension, so it's a close call. I'm in KY where we have the Daniel Boone nat'l forest that restricts 4-wheel vehicles on a lot of trails to 60"wide. That fits the stock width Polaris, but not the Rhino. Didn't know about the Kawasaki, I'll go give it a look see.

Again, thanks for the advice!
