2 man M998 rear wheels problem

Postby merrit007 » Fri Jun 10, 2016 10:32 am

HI, I am new to this forum and hope i am posting in the right place. I have an 1987 M998 that was one of the trucks released by the USMC back in the late 80's . I have noticed the rear wheels are bowed out towards the outside of the truck. I don't know if this an issue of not enough weight in the rear or if there is a way to adjust the tow. Also when driving in soft dirt or mud and you begin to turn the truck there is a clunking sound that seems to come from the rear wheel on the drivers side. Could it be the geared hub or a locker issue? One other thing i noticed is that when you hit 30 mph the truck shakes but above or below that speed it is fine. Any insight would be great. Thanks

Bowing could be ball joint or control arm bushings or just need aligning.
Clunking well 1/2 shaft, bearing in hub, ball joints control arm bushings.
Shaking wheel bent, balance, ball joints, control arm bushing. Better get it looked at. Try jacking the truck up on that side and bull tire in and out top to bottom. Sometimes you can but pry bar under tire and pull it look for movement that should not be there.. You can put transfer case in neutral and spin tire to see if noise can be reproduced on jack. 1/2 shaft should not have any play in it either...

Alignment control arm bushings, the toe is adjustable, or bad output shaft bearings
