Buying a new Hummer H1 Repair and Maintenance Questions

Postby bobby1983 » Thu Feb 25, 2016 11:27 pm

I am looking to purchase a 2001 Hummer H1 Turbo Diesel. Need some advice, thanks!

A few questions, how bad are repairs, people say its expensive and often but what does that mean, will the truck be in the shop every week, will it cost 1k 10k 20k to repair and maintain per year. Basically how bad can it get? I plan to put on maybe 5k a year max 10k. I would be taking it to my mechanic and not doing any work myself.

Another question, when purchasing what should I look for, what are the service records would this be found on the carproof report or the manual or some document that comes with the truck? If it does not have service records what should I be looking for?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, this will be a big purchase for me about 50k USD for the truck it has around 120K miles on it, not sure if thats good for pricing but i guess depends on the truck exteior and interior look mint, attached a picture.

As far as repair costs and frequency goes, that depends on how well it was taken care of before you got it and how well you maintain it. Also depends on how you drive it and if you are performing the work yourself of having a Hummer tech do the work. I would say a vast majority of the owners do the work themselves (all my friends do their own work). Most parts can be found for a decent price and installed in a few hours. Some parts take more knowledge of the vehicle to install correctly and safely.
As far as the service history, I would like to think most owners keep a file/binder/or even a box of service records (I.e. parts receipts, work orders, log of work performed with dates) sadly most dealers do not pass these on due to one reason or another. I would suggest locating a shop with a history of repairing Hummers and have them inspect it before purchase, it may cost you a few hundred dollars, but also save you thousands. There are even some members here that I'm sure could help you out in locating a shop local to you.

Hope that helps a little, good luck with you search/purchase. Feel free to add follow up questions, we are here to help.

I would definitely not be doing any of the work myself, I would take it to a mechanic.

Does anyone know of a mechanic in the Niagara Falls Ontario area?

If I have to inspect myself and I have very little car knowledge if any,,,,what are key things to look out for?

How much you'll spend will vary based on what your mechanic charges, how much he gets parts for if he won't let you buy them, obviously depends on what condition the truck is in now.

Where is the truck located?

There is a Hummer community in Canada, not sure what their site is called though. Go over to humvee.net and introduce yourself there as well, and your fellow Canadian enthusiasts might be able to point you in a good direction for a mechanic near you.

Read about halfway down on how to do a visual inspection of the engine, which is the best way to know for sure. Your truck "should" have an updated block since it is a 2001 (even though it has a "Z" engine).

Based on those pics that truck looks nice. 8)

Check engine light could be anything. Get the code scanned (any auto parts store can do this for you).
