It depends.

Getting a new or used 6.5 TD? Stock engine or upgraded? Re-using all the same accessories or not? Any upgrades while you're in there (great time to add EGT/Boost gauges and applicable sensors/probes, possibly a mechanical wastegate, and whatever else tickles your fancy).

Are you having a dealer do it, local shop, etc?

I do believe AM General's book time on a straight engine swap is close to 20 hours. Not positive on that.

Depending on if you find a used takeout engine and get a good labor rate you might be down around $7,000 total. Order a stock engine from a dealer and have them do the work, I'd budget $15K.

2 years ago, I bought a new P-400 longblock for about $5400 plus new oil pump and paid a local shop to take out my motor, swap the IP and other parts over to the new motor and instal it. I paid about $2k for the work. The P-400 required modification of the torque converter lower housing and removal of the engine ucp but otherwise was an easy fit.

So these trucks does not share any engine platform from any GM products? I thought Hummers do share engines with Chevy or GMC.

The 6.5L turbo diesel was made by GM for a few years (the bad blocks), based on a Detroit Diesel design. Well, that's what I thought I read some years ago. The 6.5 of later years has been made by GEP. The turbo is mounted differently though (rear mount on a HUMMER vs side/center mounts on Chevy/GMC).
