Roadtrip home from Arkansas to Oregon w/ 09 H3 CE

Postby H3slate » Wed Apr 13, 2016 10:27 am

I recently flew to Arkansas to purchase a 2009 H3 Championship Edition. The owner picked me up at the airport and we went back to his shop and went over the details of the truck.

It has the 5.3 V-8, a 6L80e 6 speed auto trans, front and rear lockers, 4:1 transfer case, projector headlights, Safari Snorkel, LED fog lights, Black Widow dual exhaust, Android car stereo, remote start, Bilstein 5160's in front, Bilstein 5100's in back, and 315/75/16 BFG A/T KO2's.

Shortly after I purchased it

My roadtrip home would take me out of Arkansas, through Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, Idaho, and home to Oregon.

On the way I drove through Monument Valley in southern Utah.

I found a short trail to run called the Valley of the Gods. I didn't make it through the whole trail, but it looked amazing.

On the way to Las Vegas I drove through the Valley of FIre State Park. Some amazing volcanic rock formations that I wish I had more time to get out and explore.

After picking up my family in Vegas, we drove to the Grand Canyon. This was our first view from the Visitor's Center.

After a short drive to the east, we were rewarded with clear views of the canyon.

My favorite view of the canyon is just outside Page, AZ. A short hike from the highway rewards you with this;

As we headed north we drove through Zion National Park. After a full day of driving and rain following us all day we didn't stop much as we went through.

After 5 full days of driving and 3,400 miles we made it home.

The 06 H3 in the background will be sold after I get my rack and other accessories transferred onto my new truck. The truck performed well on the drive, I loved the power of the v-8 and smooth shifts of the transmission. New to me features are the heated seats, rear backup camera, the remote start is cool, and having all my music loaded to play on the android stereo.

My plans for the new truck are to install my roof rack, oem rock sliders, KMW ucp, tomp low profile leaf spring mounts, Purple Cranium rear diff protection, SMA billet black powdercoated door handles, paint/replace chrome mirrors, and install black oem wheels to replace the chrome.

Congratulations, nice find! Were you searching long?

What a great trip to break it in. How many miles does it have? Look forward to seeing it once you get everything transferred over.

I didn't know I was looking. The rig was posted on another forum, member had documented his build of his rig. He had an opportunity to purchase an H1 and decided to sell his 3. I decided it was time to upgrade my rig while being able to transfer over my roof rack and skid plates.

Truck has 130,000 miles on it, but the shocks, front suspension, transmission, and tires are all new or been redone in the last 5,000 miles. It drives like new and just needs a little love on the leather upholstery to feel like new on the inside.

Great find and sounds like you have a complete history on it which is a bonus. You should be very happy with it.

Thanks Mark. So far I am very happy with it. Just working on getting my skid plates and roof rack transferred over. Also looking at powder coating some oem wheels and getting some Cooper STT Pros soon.

You have the prototype of some skid plates being offered now don't you? If they are the ones I am thinking of I didn't get an response and needed to go with the Rancho so built some myself that are similar. So far they have held up great though not as nicely done as yours.

I saw your plates, you did a good job building them yourself. Yes, I have the prototype skid plates from Knight Metal Works. He has improved them since I got mine. He has had a hard time gaining access to an H3 with the Rancho lift to get the measurements he needs to make the front skid fit.

I love the skid plates, much better coverage from stock, and increased ground clearance in that area.

They look really nice and well thought out, definitely better than mine. I am happy with how mine came out considering the tools I had to work with but they aren't nearly as nice as yours. If I was close I would have tried harder to get with him to use mine to prototype with the Rancho. Going to pull mine this weekend to see how they have held up with some pretty good torture. Like you said so much better coverage than the stock UCP and they don't get hung up like stock. I really noticed the extra clearance too.
