Arkansaw mini-blizzard

Postby Hunner » Mon Feb 08, 2010 8:44 pm

Forcast at 1 am was for rain and sleet. Around 6 am it started snowing until about 6 inches fell our here in the sticks. (there are no windows in the weather bureau?) They must have got some phone calls because around 7 they predicted SNOW! That qualifies as a blizzard here. Schools close, all the milk and bread is gone and the people that have to work, try to drive like they always do. Disaster! Then they usually go home early and don't accomplish anything but wrecks. Neighbors are medical people at the Childrens hospital so I took them in. They will stay there tonight. I figured my quick install chains needed a test. I got these that are small links with criss cross that are rated high speed. Yeah like 35. The Highway Police use them. I only used the chains because of ice under the snow. I took them off after we got to town. They are really simple to put on. Now all the pushed up center area of the lanes is freezing and tiny cars are bottoming out and ditching. In the morning it will be like concrete. I may try the rears tomorrow. The Sy-Klone pre-cleaner worked great. Looked like a snow blower! I spun the outlet around so I could see it late this afternoon when the big flakes were coming down.
Just checked and we have had about 10 inches which while it does not compare to up North we have all we need! ha ha I love it! More tomorrow.

X2
I lived in Knoxville, TN for a few years and the same thing. The weather "service" would THREATEN snow and next thing you know, schools are closed, they're "salting" the roads down (they use some kind of chemical not salt), there is a run on WalMart

I grew up in southern California and I'm looking at people thinking WTF is wrong with ya'll? We would get no more than 3" of snow that would usally be all melted away by noon the next day and everyone would freek out. We usually got ice storms which sucked, but even then, PUT SOME CHAINS ON AN DEAL WITH IT!
I knew folks that had never left south-east TN that never owned a pair of chains. I mean a little bit of snow and ice in the winter was on par weather out there. Why are they surprised when it happens every year?

Anyways, have fun Hunner. Oh, and I charged $50 to pull cars outta ditches, $75 to drive you to work, and $150 to get you from your door step to your car. :yup:

You order them by tire size. When I got those I was running Mt/mtz but I installed them on these Bridgestones and they did fine. Nobody around here carries chains that I could find so once again the internet was the answer.

You probably need a tiny bit heavier than I have. My heavy mud chains would pale in comparison to what you would use.
The crossed ones with the hula hoop are very clever for a quick install and removal on smaller vehicles. I like them because they do not ride rough. When you do get on exposed areas they are probably easier on the tires. Being able to drive about 30 all the while being tailgated by somebody that could probably end up needing to be pulled out of a ditch!
Be carefull out there!

Yea, actually we are not permitted to run chains on the streets in this area. last year we had over 110 inches of snow and after getting stuck in several loading docks , i rigged up a set of Cheater Chains that lasted a couple of weeks and that was about it.

We have had some pretty good snow here too. Years ago I ran chains on my K5 Blazer for plowing when the going got tough, really unstoppable with them on.

I live in the Harrisburg, PA area and I think in the past week we've had about 30 or 35" inches. The H3 is doing great but I could have used the chains the other day when I pulled of the side of the road to let a car go by and slipped down in a gully on the side of the "no winter maintenance" road. Took about 15 minutes, a few small braches and my lockers to get out but I did it. I think I might not have if I was drive something else.
I also seen the National Guard blocking the entrances to the highways tonight on my way to work with Humvees. Not something you see every day. All main roads were closed around here. Enjoy your snow. :)
When I get home I'll try to post a picture with this post.

You guys definatly get way more than we do but we seem to get sleet and rain that freezes first then the snow hides that and can be interesting. The general public just does not know how to handle it and most stay home. Our temps are staying below freezing and we have another front going by down south of us which is unusual. It may/no now it's forming up in line with us. Time for more milk and bread! I'm making a batch of venison chili and stacking firewood next to the door. Our other fun thing is since it does not do this much the power company does not keep limbs trimmed until they have to which is usually why thousands of people get their power knocked out. I have back up generators that back feed from out in my shop where I can run them out of the weather and have a huge exhaust fan that ventilates the shop. I don't stay in there of course. I already must have drain bamage! :wall:
The great thing about these chains is you just lay them out and untangle any snarffles and then slide this whole mess off to one side and then behind the tire. You pull up the blue end the yellow end on the hoop and then start pulling the chains over the tire. In this layed out shot you will see there is a gap between the halves. So when you reach over the tire and pull up the two ends it leaves the gap at the bottom where the tire is in contact with the ground. After getting everything hitched up and a short roll to retighten your done! Off is easy as well.
Just saw PA. on the weather channel, ugh! Stay warm.

Sounds like you're well prepaired for the weather, I don't think I have any supplemental heat or power and I should. I do have a gas stove top. :yup: Enjoy your wather.
