charles wrote:In reading the Guide to Moab, UT, Backroads and 4-Wheel Drive Trails, the following trails (runs) seem very interesting:
**Klondike Bluffs, Moderate - Primarily an easy to moderate trail, but there are some passages where it is narrow with a lot of boulders. The rains a few weeks ago through the area washed out a lot of the sand, thus causing some areas to be a bit more difficult. But should be no problem. Once you enter the park you can then take short road over to Tower Arch, then down Salt Creek TRAIL to Eye of the Whale Arch, and then into the center of the park near Balanced Rock. Then you can travel around Arches.
**Long Canyon, Easy - Just ran this one last week, 'pucker pass' has had a washout, and there are some steep boulders to climb or come down, but 80 percent of the trail is still ok, but a bit bumpier than before the rains.
**Shafer Trail, Easy - Park service keeps this one in good condition.
**White Rim, Moderate - 110 miles long, to run in one day is about 10 hours. Best way to run White Rim is to camp out overnight at one of the camp sites. Costs are 35 bucks per campsite through the NP. It makes for a nice trip to either go up Long Canyon or Gemini Bridges, then go over to Shafer Trail, down the trail to the fork where Potash road and White Rim meets. Go down the White Rim to Mussleman Arch, back to the Potash Road, the Potash back to 279 and back into Moab. Primarily easy to moderate trails, and makes for a full day.

I would be interested in hearing any comments about these runs (...and others) and who would be interesting on doing these. My wife and I are only interested in Moderate or Easy runs.

For easy to you can also consider Hurrah Pass, then on to Chicken Corners. Top of the World is a moderate, and Willow Flats (takes you by some dinosaur tracks) that runs into Arches NP

Trust your group leaders over the books. The book I had was pretty useless. It called fins easy and Hell's on the upper end of difficult. Setting aside my fear of heights - I actually thought fins was technically harder (though still easy ). I thought hells was super easy unless you do the optional obstacles. Keep in mind the optional stuff on hells is completely optional i.e. it's not a group decision, you can wait and watch while others try the optional spurs.
Blow off responsibilities, growing up, and all the boring things in life and do something cool.

Rich nailed it with his observations , we have gotten base model trucks thru all of these trails , the hard stuff is optional .... starting with 7-mile and working our way up will be ideal for any newbies , we have taken people that had never really wheeled before and they all have done great , just a week away now :D

I will add that Neo is a good judge of character, ability and truck. He never lets me do the tough optional obstacles.   I mean he gently persuades me that it may not be in my best interests.

Unfortunately I can't make this one. I think it would be a little tough with my 7 and a half week old daughter. :D But if anyone is passing thru OKC and you need a beer, PM me and we'll swap phone numbers.

Mark, are you passing thru, or are am I too far south of your route?

Congratulations on the new arrival, JustinOK! Enjoy your time with your family! :D

As for me... We're already on the way, staying overnight in Albuquerque tonight. We'll arrive in Moab tomorrow afternoon, at the same time as my wife's sisters arrive for their husband's mountainbiking vacation. The ladies will be basking poolside for the week. That gives me at least three days of Hummer playtime! :D

We'll be staying at the LaQuinta Moab through Thursday morning. I am planning to leave Thursday to allow plenty of time to get home to Oklahoma, just in case... :)

Looking forward to meeting everyone! 8)
