AZ - 2009 planning thread

Postby alrock » Wed Dec 10, 2008 11:11 pm

Hey, we've had some good ideas come up for trips and of course everyone's time is tight, so I though we could have a thread to plan out some of the bigger events. I'll put a few things down that are being considered and/or are already in the works.

January
nothing yet
Crown King night run? What's a good date?

February
nothing yet
Anza-Borrego? We could even invite the California guys

March
Moab, Saturday March 14 through Monday, March 16. I'm actually thinking of driving up Friday night (7.5 hours), camping with a cabin (sleeps 4) and wheeling Saturday, Sunday and Monday. After the trail I would drive home Monday night for Tuesday work. I'm a glutton for punishment. There are some other Hummer dudes from other forums considering this trip so we could have a good gathering.

April
Moab Black Sheep Week is Sunday April 12- Saturday April 18, the week after Jeep week. I don't know if I'll do a whole week but I'm open to it. Again it would likely be camping for me. I'm going. Trails can vary from wild to mild, whatever you like.

Undated ideas:

Mojave Road, idea courtesy of Daniel. From Bullhead City west to Barstow, about 138 miles. 2 day trip (minimum) with camping, obviously. This could be a great trip with lots of scenery and history involved. Not a technical trip so this is a good trip for those looking to avoid the difficult stuff. Needs to be avoided in summer and winter. Would likely require a three day weekend or a long night to get back home.

If you have some ideas, dates, etc, please post them up. I'll try and update this top post to show the new ideas so we have one reference post.

I'm ready to run Mojave again. Some of us were thinking Jan. Would it be too cold? I guess that depends on the luck of the weekend weather. At any rate, we should try and get a multi chapter run going. April? June?

I think a fair number of H1 guys from Humvee.net are interested in running it also.

I live in the "mohave road" area. that trail starts just down the road from me. the usual meetng spot is the Avi Casino. January can be pretty cold. Well for me anyway. Our norms are in the 120+ degrees so when in gets as low as the high 20's it feels cold. Plus the wind effect...Mohave would be best run in March. Just after the cold and just before it gets blistering.

I Am SO SO SO SO SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO down for a moab run. I want to run with those sheep guys. They always seem to have the a lot of cools spots and trails. And i just want to be able to say i wheeled in moab! You know, just to do it at least once! So what ever month would the medium trails be, thats when and where i want to go. I was happy and content with Smiley rock. That was perfect for my comfort level, maybe a bit harder ;)

OH! Alex, i have another idea that would bring you back to the Parker/Havasu area. If you wanted to bring anyone back down to Cattail cove, that would be cool, but how about Bill Williams National Reserve?! Its in the Wells book that we have. It sounds cool and by the pics shown looks awsome!!! Either way, it would be nice to have all you guys check out some of the stuff in my neck of the woods. :D

Not to be hog'n this thread but what about doing Smiley Rock again, BUT in the snow! Jerome gets snow right? That would make it very interesting and a bit mor challenging. I just ran Pass Canyon a week ago and that is a nice trail too!

I am planning doing a mini-vacation in Sedona this year. Maybe we could set up an off-road trip. What time of year would be best?

Anytime you are here :D . Sedona is about 20 degrees cooler than PHX. I would probably shoot for May for great weather. But we'll meet you anytime so plan your trip first and count us in from there.

Cool. I will probably start a thread once we start planning things.
