Treadlightly and Cabela's SWAG..

Postby The Other Rob » Wed Aug 06, 2008 7:07 pm

Not sure how many of you get emails from Treadlightly, but I got one today that I found a little bit disturbing..

Here's how it goes...

Dear Friend of Tread Lightly!,

Tread Lightly!® would like to take this opportunity to thank you for supporting the Friend of Tread Lightly! program. We appreciate the commitment you’ve made to responsible recreation and hope you have found our email update “Treadlines” to be both helpful and educational.

You are receiving this letter because we need your help. Severe government budget cuts and damage caused by irresponsible recreation behavior are threatening the closure of trails, campgrounds and waterways across the country.

No one wants to lose the ability to recreate on public lands, and there are no easy fixes to the problems, but there are solutions. That’s where Tread Lightly! and you come in. Recognized by the federal government as a partner actively engaged in working to implement solutions to the problems associated with irresponsible recreation, the Tread Lightly! program is long-term in scope with a goal to balance the needs of the people who enjoy outdoor recreation with the needs to maintain a healthy environment.

Tread Lightly! relies on annual contributions made by our members to achieve our mission to proactively protect recreation access and opportunities in the outdoors through ethics education and stewardship initiatives.

Contributions received as unrestricted funds are used to: Replenish, promote and distribute educational materials; Recruit members; Communicate with state and federal agencies, youth organizations, other environmental groups, members and the general public; Raise funds; Restore degraded recreation sites; Create and promote Public Awareness Campaigns; Develop youth programs; Meet the needs for payroll and general overhead.

The ultimate goal is to have healthy, open, and accessible outdoors for many generations to come and education is the key for sustainability.

I encourage you to take a moment and visit the individual member page to become an official member of Tread Lightly! ($25 tax-deductible) today.

Upon doing so you will receive a membership package containing a gift, an educational piece, a decal and a chance to win a great prize package from Goodyear, Adjustagrill, or Cabela's worth up to $800!

Most importantly, you will have the great feeling of knowing you are making a difference.

If you have any questions regarding Tread Lightly! or our programs please contact us at 800-966-9900.

Sincerely,

Tracey Hackworth

CABELA'S..!!!!

Here's the quickly worded response I put together for her..

Tracey.

Don't know if you are aware of this or if it makes a big differenceto you or Treadlightly, but Cabela's is a major supporter and sponsor of Trout Unlimited. Trout unlimited has been fighting tooth and nail to close the offroad trail systems at Tellico and have them PAVED to create better access for trout fishing.

You can get more info on the fight to keep Tellico open in many places around the web, but one of the best sources of information is on Pirate 4x4.
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=88

Now it's just my humble opinion, but I would suggest sending any and all prizes from Cabela's right back where they came from with a note explaining why.

Anyroads... If any of you would like to send her your thoughts on this her email is tracey@treadlightly.org

The TL Reply..

Hi Rob. Tracey forwarded your email to me.

In my opinion, if Tread Lightly! stops taking product and money (we get that too) from Cabela’s, we will have even fewer resources to help proactively protect recreation access and opportunity than we already have. In the end, an organization supporting your sport (Tread Lightly!) will have less resources and Trout Unlimited won’t. In fact, it frees up resources from Cabela’s to give more to a group like TU.

To this end, I appreciate your expressed concerns, but I really think it’s a mistake to relinquish any of the resources TL!’s receives to help is the fight to protect access and opportunities in the great outdoors

I hope you can understand my position.

Sincerely,
~Lori

If this were BRC or UFWDA we were talking about, I think I would agree with your position. But Tread Lightly is not strictly an OHV group. They cover all outdoor activities, including those which most Cabelas customers would partake in - hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, etc. And with the struggle these groups are going through to get funding, I don't think it makes sense to shun a major corporate sponsor. As long as TL isn't using that money to close our trails, I don't see the problem. Hell, if Sierra Club wants to donate money to TL, I say take it. Now, if you want to boycott or go after Cabela's because of their support of Trout Unlimited, that makes more sense to me.
