CO - Great Sand Dunes trip

Postby Detours » Fri May 23, 2008 5:13 pm

I took the fam to the Sand Dunes last weekend. It's about a 4.5 hour drive southwest of Denver. You can take I-25 south, but that's boring. We took the scenic route through the mountains on US-285.

After setting up camp, we went right to the dunes. Our national park pass got us in, and the kids finally got to see why I was so excited about this place.

We're standing in Medano Creek. It's pure snowmelt from the Sangre de Cristo mountains behind us. The stream actually disappears under the dunes and then floats back up to water the valley below.

That is awesome! I love the look of sand dunes with the snow capped mountain backdrop. Very cool. I am glad you guys had fun. :)

They're the tallest dunes in North America. Formed at the angle between the Sangre de Cristo and San Juan ranges, the dunes rise 750 feet above the grasslands below.

The jogger was a good idea (Sheldon can't walk), but those skinny tires weren't cutting it. The next morning we got one of the park's dune wheelchairs and tried again.

Thanks! Yeah it's awesome!

Here we are, collapsed on the sand ... dang he's heavy. Wipe that smile off your face, you rascal! We used the straps on both sides and pushed/pulled him up to the first sand field. We got pretty high, but it wore us out.

The light colored sand behind us is actually larger and heavier than the rest. Wind blows them in between the dunes and they can't get out.

I love this place. We're already planning to go back without the kids and hike to the top. Probably do some wheeling up Medano pass too.
